FREEBSD INSTALLABLE IMAGES
- Copying FreeBSD to SDCARD
- Caution On Writing Small Block Sizes: Extremely slow if
you write with dd using default bs=512, as eg device wants
4K buffers, so to write 4K of data, I think OS has to read
the output device 8 times, each time editing 512 bytes in
buffer, then writing out the 4K buffer, then repeating with
next 512 bytes. Test results writing SDCard:
- to sdcard: bs=32k 5,980,740 bytes/sec
- to sdcard: bs=4k 5,039,713 bytes/sec
- to sdcard: bs=512 37,498 bytes/sec
- to Hama USB stick: bs=4k 267,307 bytes/sec
- Caution On Writing Large Block Sizes:
Though docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/bsdinstall/
specifies:
dd bs=1M conv=sync
Older kernel versions of FreeBSD eg 12.3-RELEASE, do not
support writes with as big as bs=32k.
