Operating System: Was FreeBSD-5.1 (newest possible 5.2.1) , now 7.0BETA3

To Get ATA Disk To Work

To avoid future need of "Safe Boot", Add
hw.ata.ata_dma to 0
to
/boot/loader.conf

Did not work native after install . Massive timeouts.
Now works OK, after adding
machdep.bios.pci="disable"
to
/boot/loader.conf

Sound:

Add
snd_ess_load="YES"
to
/boot/loader.conf
Then it partially works:
  • Works OK from inbuilt CDROM with cdcontrol
  • Plays slow with .WAV files from local disk & other disk activity interrupts it.
  • wavplay audio_01.wav (a 45M file on local disk) Plays slow with drop outs.
  • Fails with .mp3 from local disk.
    • Sounds heavily distorted, breaking up, as if data in could not keep up with music out, Source on local disk (not via NFS) & using ksmp3play (on both 24x80 screen & X-Windows)
  • Fails with .mp3 from RAM disk system:
    • I tried this

      & NFS play of an mp3 on idle net & idle cpu both ends.
  • Fails with NFS
    NFS + .WAV: wavplay audio_01.wav (a 45M file on NFS disk) still played in jerks.
  • xs rtprio 1 madplay *. mp3 plays far better than ksmp3play
  • systat -vm & split swap re music
  • /dev/sndstat

  • Conclusions

    • I am not disc bandwidth limited (but may be being impacted by Non DMA ?
      I need to look at non DMA in /boot/loader.conf
    • NFS playing doesn't even work properly between 2 fast hosts, so no chance on this slower host.
    • Maybe the 133M Pentium can't decompress MP3 fast enough ?
    • Maybe there's something in ess driver failing, or another faster driver might be available ?

X Windows Compiled & Runs OK

AMD & NFS work fine

AMD + NFS are used extensively to get more /usr/ports space, as everything self compiled on this laptop.

USB da0 Stalls

USB mouse works, USB LAN stick recognised, but USB memory sticks & USB hard discs fail.
Maybe I need to add or emove something in /boot/loader.conf ?
