BIM People,
(Antworten in Deutsch veilleicht am besten fuer dieses Subject ? )
I spoke to the owner of Pele's Computer Bookshop, Schiller Str, today 5th Nov.:
I have Herr Lang's agreement for BIM to do a BSD Installathon there.
http://www.peles.de PelesGmbH_ERASE@aol.com
Tel 089 555229 Fax 089 5503711 Schillerstr 17, 80336 Muenchen
He looked worried when I called it an Install Party, so I quickly
reverted to `Installathon' & assured him: Not loads of people, no
alcoholic drinks, etc ! ( I used the name Install Party as someone
in BIM didn't like the name `Installathon', but `Party' is a word
to avoid for this venue.
I Explained The Idea Was:
- No money changes hands either way between BIM & Pele's.
- Perhaps 3 or 4 BIM people, working succesive perhaps partly overlapping
shifts of maybe a couple of hours each, doing quick minimal BSD installs.
- BIM installers to bring their individual laptops for reference if
they have one (if not, no big problem), far more importantly ...
- Public to bring PCs, & us to do quick minimal installs, & point
public to front of shop, & encourage them to buy BSD CDROMs
from shop ( Shop has to see some benefit )
FreeBSD-4.6 was 35 Euro next to cashiers desk today (yes
current release is 4.7, & yes they normally have NetBSD &
OpenBSD too, though I didn't see them today, but let's be
grateful for any bookshop such as this, which always has
BSD CDROMs on the cash desk, right by all the people buying.
- Install to be minimal: objective being to introduce maximum people
to BSD & maximal sales for Pele's (which could encourage them
or others to do it again).
- Extensive config work/ EG apache & other non src/ stuff, &/or
further advice to be done some other place / time, by mutual
agreement, not at Pele's.
- We do the event when it's not too busy there, so after Christmas.
He suggested January. I wondered if we might have too many BIM
people &/or public off skiing then ? He said May would be a
particularly good month. He's open, he'd do it any time,
We need to choose a date.
- Not the near future, because we needed
time to prepare & spread the word for maximum impact.
- We'd try to do a booking system of maybe half hour slots,
to avoid congestion in shop. (This could be on a sheet of paper on
the day, printed from bookings previously entered on web,
supplementd by people who just turn up, don't book, & risk waiting.
- We didn't discuss Saturday versus a day in the Week, I think he'd go
for either, whoever in BIM volunteers to help can decide this.
- I don't plan to man the table myself: no need to burden
the public with my mangling of the German language, when we've
got 80 native German speakers in BIM.
Odds:
- I have a small collapsible table & 2 chairs (if Pele's
hasn't, I didn't ask). I could deliver by car, even a
monitor too if I must, but parking is impossible so needs
synchronisation by mobile (cell/handy) phone.
- We should check he has adequate stocks of CDs near the day.
Maybe I should ask WC/BSDi if they could offer Pele's a
deeper 1 day discount & extra sale or return stock to pull
the crowds: `Cheaper BSD CDs this day/week only' or some such ?
- Tie ins with other BSD paraphanelia suppliers ? T shirt, Badges.
- If they have the Lehmanns CD too (which they often do),
maybe Olli might do a CD signing session like authors do ?
- Organisers will have a free remit, it'll be their initiative
& time, so they, not the rest of us, will decide what's
done. The rest of us may make suggestions, but preferences
of the participating volunteers are paramount.
Volunteers Needed !
- To print enough BIM leaflets in readiness.
- To sit in shop & do CDROM installs.
We already have one volunteer
"Helmut Allwang" helmut.allwang__ERASE@web.de
We need a few more.
- A couple of people to now contact computer magazines, & ask
them how much notice they will need, when we announce the
event, & what email/phone contact & format they want the
event description / anouncement in.
- People who use news reader software to choose newsgroups,
& prepare to post later.
- Someone to compile a list of non-subscriber-only interested
mail lists for a later announcement.
- People subscribed to subscriber-only interested mail lists,
to register with a central co-ordinator their willingness to
forward a one offf announcement when the time comes.
- Someone to contact Hamburg BSD club & ask them what they
learnt to do & not do & what they reccomend, from experience
of their Installathon / Install Party.
- Booking Form On Web
- Web editor to take this email from
http://www.berklix.org/bim/install/
take editorial control & translate to German,
& incorporate other people's ideas.
I can offer web space on the BIM servers for whoever
does this, &/or set a URL pointing from the BIM page to
an Installthon page on your site, if you prefer. )
Please discuss. Above all we need a volunteer to take control of
http://www.berklix.org/bim/install/
Now we have a location available, we need the volunteers please !
Bemerkungen ? Fragen ? Freiwilligen bereit zu helfen ??

BIM4 has space for maybe 4 people (inc public & installers)
front of shop, much coming & going, suggested by Herr Lang, OR
BIM3 has space for maybe 3 people (inc public & installers),
quieter location at back of shop, suggested after by Julian.
Installers + Herr Lang can decide what's best.

"Hubert Feyrer":
How about "Install Workshop" if you need to find another name.
If they're interested, I have a number of NetBSD 1.6 CDs here that I can
offer for either the 4-CD-all-archs-base-plus-X set or
the 6-CD-i386-install-plus-3000-pkgs set. If they're interested to offer
these CDs, they 're welcome to contact me at hubert@feyrer.de. Price will
be at about 30-40EUR for each CD, discount possible.

I can do so if they also have the Lehmanns NetBSD 1.4.x CD. :-)

"Mahmut Kursun":
I would suggest less than 7 people for an Installathon. The back
is more relaxed but the front would attract more people, because
they can see you through the window.
For the Presscontact, you should prepare a Press announcement and
fax it to the Magazines that are interested like C t, iX about 6-8
weeks in advance.
For local papers, you should fax this to "Lokalredaktion" of SZ,
AZ, TZ, MM 1-2 Weeks in advance is enough.
There are lots of weekly/bimonthly magazines like Sendlinger Anzeiger,
IN M\xfcnchen and maybe another 5-10 interesting titles that should
be informed.
Also you could send the Press announcement as an E-Mail to all these
people in addition to the fax.
Maybe I could help you with Press announcements.

"Stephan Gehring":
Depending on when ist gonna happen, i'll gladly offer my time to do some
basic NetBSD installations, maybe even on non-Intel Hardware (i could use
my Sun SS5 for that one).
My laptops runs NetBSD too, but due to unsupported graphics without X
at the moment. Nevertheless it should be sufficient to demonstrate how
to dual-boot a computer using win2k an NetBSD 1.6.
